This was the group's first hit single and it held the #1 position on Billboard's Hot 100 for four weeks. Certified as a Gold Record, it received 2 Grammy nominations and has exceeded BMI's four million broadcast performances level. In 1970, Joe Cocker released a cover of the song, which became one of the signature songs of his famous Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. Wayne Carson was named to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1997. was named to the Songwriter's Hall Of Fame in 1970.
